The Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) is a monthly composite index based on the National Restaurant Association's Restaurant Industry Tracking Survey of restaurant operators throughout the U.S. It utilizes two components, the Current Situation Index and the Expectations Index, to track the health of and the outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry.

The latest RPI (reporting the month of September) was just released October 31th. Here's what you should know:

  •  Overall RPI at 101, down .8%

  •  100+ signifies key industry indicators are in a period of expansion 

  •  Index has now stood above 100 for 19 consecutive months

  •  63% of operators reported same-store sales gain from this time last year

  •  While 45% of operators (same as August) reported an increase in customer traffic  from this time last year, those reporting a softer traffic climbed from 21% to 23%.
