Earvin "Magic" Johnson to Keynote NRA Show 2014

NBA legend, entrepreneur and philanthropist addressed NRA Show® 2014 attendees on May 18, 2014.

Attendees left empowered and inspired as Earvin “Magic” Johnson presented his keynote address to over 2,000 attendees in the Grand Ballroom at NRA Show 2014. Johnson shared his inspirational journey in the foodservice industry. What started out as a dream to bring the premium movie experience to urban America, Johnson parlayed the “Magic” brand to include 125 Starbucks stores, serving as owner to the LA Lakers, LA Dodgers, and much more.

“I started out in the foodservice business by getting on the truck to deliver Pepsi with the driver because I wanted to learn every aspect of the business,” says Johnson. He kept the crowd entertained with stories of how he had educated top industry professionals on the urban market–such as introducing Howard Schultz of Starbucks to his theatres during the premiere of Waiting to Exhale. Johnson also shared additional words of wisdom.

  • Know your customer and speak to them every day…
  • Always over deliver…
  • Reinvest back in the business for successful, sustainable growth…
  • Don’t change your lifestyle until you know your success can support it…
  • Managing food costs is #1…He recalled the learning curve of purchasing from end of week to first of the week and how that helped him with costs
  • Put the time in…training staff is key, and it’s important to show your staff that no job is too big for you–at which time Johnson recalled mopping up spilled coffee at one of his Starbuck’s locations
With comical interruptions like a photo opportunity with an unsuspecting guest to hugs for an attendee who presented Johnson with chocolates from her small local company, the Magic Johnson’s keynote presentation exemplified what the NRA Show is all about: a place to learn, laugh, and leave inspired.

"Mr. Johnson is an inspiration to us all,” said Sam Facchini, Convention Chair for NRA Show 2014 and co-owner/co-founder of Metro Pizza. “He didn’t let where he came from dictate where he could go. He has spent his life overcoming challenges and giving back to his communities. He is the embodiment of the American Dream in general, and the spirit of the restaurant industry in particular.”
